Virtual Events 2026/2027: Making the Future BETTER

In a world shaped by rapid technological change, the future will still depend on people with the creativity, skills and ingenuity to solve problems, improve lives and build stronger communities. Making the Future 2026/2027: Making the Future Better will introduce students to the makers, craftspeople and innovators who are doing exactly that.

Through live virtual workplace encounters, students will step inside workshops, studios and creative businesses across the UK, meeting professionals who are using their skills to create positive change. From restoring historic buildings and designing sustainable products to improving wellbeing, preserving traditional skills and developing new technologies, these makers demonstrate how craftsmanship and creativity play a vital role in shaping the future.

Across four themed events, students will discover how people are:

  • Making the Future Better for People through creativity, wellbeing and community.
  • Making the Future Better for the Planet through sustainability, repair and responsible making.
  • Making the Future Better through Skills by preserving and developing valuable heritage, technical and creative expertise.
  • Making the Future Better through Innovation by combining traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technologies and new ways of thinking.

Together, these stories show that the future is not something that simply happens. It is something we create, shape and improve through the things we make and the skills we choose to develop. The future is human-made. And everyone has the potential to play a part in making it better.
